Timar, 29, was the Pilgrims' player-of-the-year in 2007/08 but manager Paul Sturrock is now ready to listen to offers for him.

The form of on-loan Manchester United centre-back Craig Cathcart kept Timar on the sidelines for much of this season.

He made only 13 starts for Argyle in the Championship, plus another eight appearances as a substitute.

It is thought Timar became increasingly frustrated about his lack of first-team opportunities during the course of the season.

Sturrock is under pressure to reduce the size of his squad because money is tight at Home Park.

So Timar is likely to be one of several players that the Pilgrims' boss would be prepared to sell for the right price.

The Budapest-born 6ft 2in Hungary international signed for Argyle, initially on loan, from his hometown club, Ferencvaros, in January 2007.

Timar completed a permanent transfer that summer, when he put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

The powerful centre-back became very popular with the Green Army in the 2007/08 season, and was dubbed 'The Timarnator'.

Timar was voted Argyle's player-of-the-year, beating Hungarian compatriot Peter Halmosi into second spot.

However, his season ended on a sour note when he suffered a fractured skull in a 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Halmosi completed a £2 million move to Premier League newcomers Hull City last July, but Timar signed a new long-term contract with Argyle. It took him through to the summer of 2011, with an option for a further year.

But Timar was in and out of the Pilgrims' side this season as he competed for a place with Cathcart and Mathias Doumbe.

Timar's last start came in the 1-0 defeat away to Swansea City on March 10.

After that, his involvement was limited to being an unused substitute for eight of the last nine games of the Championship campaign.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old former Argyle winger Dan Smith has signed for Eastbourne Borough on a permanent contract.

Smith, who was released by the Pilgrims earlier this month, had a successful three-month loan spell at the Conference club this season.

He made 14 appearances for Eastbourne and scored three goals, as well as creating several others.

Smith returned to Argyle at the end of February but was not involved in any first-team action before the end of the Championship campaign.

Eastbourne, who finished 13th in the Conference this season, hold twice-weekly training sessions.

But Smith will be undertaking extra work under the supervision of manager Garry Wilson and head coach Nick Greenwood.

He said: "I want to enjoy my football again. I was disappointed when I couldn't stay until the end of the season.

"I was made so welcome and enjoyed my time so much at the club that I'm happy to be coming back.

"The club showed how much they wanted me by coming in straight away when it was known I was leaving Argyle.

"I can't wait for next season to start."

Smith played only twice for Argyle at first-team level, both occasions as a second-half substitute.
